Geodetic and Control Data

Our Geodetic and Control Data consists of precise reference points and networks that form the backbone for all mapping and surveying activities across South Africa. This data ensures spatial accuracy and consistency for all geospatial datasets and infrastructure planning.

Trigonometrical Beacons (Trig Beacons)

Trigonometrical beacons are high-accuracy geodetic control points used for national surveying and geospatial referencing. These fixed, visible markers are distributed across the country and provide essential reference for triangulation and mapping. Each beacon includes detailed coordinate information such as latitude, longitude, and ellipsoidal height.

Town Survey Marks (TSMs)

Town Survey Marks are control points used primarily for urban and cadastral surveying within towns and cities. These marks provide reliable local references and are essential for property boundary surveys, engineering design, and municipal infrastructure planning. They are often embedded in pavements, sidewalks, or other permanent structures.

You can explore Geodetic Control Data using the Interactive Map or download metadata and datasets from the Metadata Catalogue.
